It's hair wash day and I revel in the anticipation of sudsing my hair with my Melanin Haircare African black soap shampoo and hydrating my coils with my Camille Rose Leave in and fertilizing my scalp with my Curly Proverbz fenugreek oil. Im proud to say that I am FUBUing it when it comes to hair care and skin care. Any chance I get to support a black business is a sweet symphony to my pockets.
It's February and you know what that means. We get to celebrate black excellence and black love all in the same month. I am grateful for all of the attributes of black creators and inventors. Im all for supporting black owned businesses all year round but especially during Black History Month. It feels good to know that daily I am saturating my hair and skin with products created by black women. Adorning myself in jewels by black women. Draping my body with threads by black women. And you can too! Here are 5 tried and true black designers and businesses to support during black history/future month and any other month.
1. Skin Buttr
In the words of Porsha Williams, "bye bye ashy!" Skin Buttr by Tataiana Elizabeth is my favorite brand when it comes to bodycare. Her buttrs and scrubs are dry skin approved! Your skin will be the softest place on earth, word to Xscape. The butters are so rich and have such beautiful, angelic scents. They are the most delicious inedible butters ever. I rarely use mine because I cherish each jar and it always sells out before I can get another one. Every time I do use it people always describe the smell as some kind of dessert, whether it be a cake or a cookie. My all time favorite scent is "cocoa vanilla". My other faves are "strawberry vanilla" and "gingr lemon."
2. Home by Areeayl
Where avante garde and whimsical art meet. Each piece of jewerly is quite a fantasy to look at. I am always pleasantly amused when I visit her website. Each creation is handmade to artful perfection. From having potted flowers dangling from your ears, to bite-sized gold chairs delicately enveloping your neck. Dare to be TRAPATES in her jewelry.
3. Hanifa
Hanifa: where femininity and grace is celebrated. One of my favorite designers, Anifa Mvuemba, just gets it! All of her pieces are a moment in themselves. I bought this skirt on sale in 2019 and it's a staple in my closet. Not only are the garments amazing, the shoes are to live for. I am so amused that the world has stopped sleeping on Hanifa.
4. My Fantasy Collection
When I came across this brand in 2018, I was not only blown away by their beautiful robes, I was also swooned by their awesome customer service. I not only wear their robes lounging around the house, I wear them out because they are just that fabulous. Run to their site and treat the ladies in your life to a stunning luxurious robe.
5. Black Girl Sunscreen
Yes black people wear sunscreen too. This sunscreen doubles as a moisturizer as well. It leaves the skin glowing and glistening. And no, it does not leave behind a ghostly white cast. It's made with clean ingredients and infused with nourishing oils. It's perfect for a glowy, melanated skincare routine just as radiant as you are.
Supporting black-owned businesses isn't just for February, it can be a year long lifestyle. It's a movement surrounding uplifting and celebrating the creativity and resilience of the black community. As we honor this special month, let's commit to supporting black entrepreneurs all day, every day.
